Friends Arena - Wikipedia

Structure and facilities[edit]. Points of interest[edit]. Football average attendances[edit]. External links[edit].

Nationalarenan is currently called Friends Arena because of sponsorship. It is a multi-purpose retractable roof stadium in Stockholm, Sweden. It is located just north of the City Centre and next to Lake Rastasjon, Solna. It is the largest stadium in Scandinavia. The venue was opened in 1984 and has been Sweden's national stadium of men's soccer since then. This is why it is called Nationalarenan. The stadium's main tenants are the Allsvenskan football team AIK and Sweden's men’s national football team. They both moved from their old home at Rasunda Stadium. The stadium has a capacity of 65,000 for concerts and 50,000 at football matches. However, the stadium can be reduced to accommodate smaller events with around 20,000 people.

Initial plans were to build a national stadium near the indoor venue Ericsson Globe, Stockholm. However, the Swedish Football Association (SvFF), decided to build the new stadium at Solna on April 1, 2006. The total cost of the project was 1.9 billion Kronor (202 millions euro). Before construction began, the estimated cost was 2.3 billion Kronor. It was the replacement for Rasunda Stadium in Sweden, which was once Sweden's national football arena. It was demolished and replaced with 700 flats and office towers.

Swedbank purchased the naming rights for the stadium in a deal worth 153 million Kronor (20.5 million euros) that will continue until 2023. The arena was originally called Swedbank Arena. However, Swedbank announced that in 2012 it would donate its name rights to Friends, a non-profit organization fighting school bullying, of which Swedbank has been a sponsor. The stadium was renamed Friends Arena.
